  Design and Development of Hybrid IPv4 and IPv6 Network for QoS Enabled Video Streaming Multicast Application  

National ICT R&D Fund was created in January 2007 by Ministry of IT with the vision to transform Pakistan's economy into a knowledge-based economy by promoting efficient, sustainable, and effective ICT (IT and Telecommunications) initiatives through synergic development of industrial and academic resources. Collaborative efforts between academia, research institutions, and industry are greatly encouraged to ensure that local economy can reap the monetary benefits of investment in research. This organization has significant funds available for proposals that are geared towards creating ICT related technologies.

Research grants will be awarded for high-level and promising ICT-related development and research projects by individuals or groups from academia and/or industry actively involved in the development and research individually or collaboratively. These projects should be based on either a universally known technology or a new technology developed by the applicant and should be aimed at achieving economically viable systems, products, or processes beneficial to the nation.

Executive Summary

In the IP networking scenario, the world is gradually moving toward the next generation of IP, i.e., IPv6. Co-existence model of IPv6 and IPv4 are envisioned for the near future and many countries and communities have started adopting this model. In Pakistan too, the initial efforts of IPv6 deployment are started with the introduction of nation-wide IPv6 backbone project named 6Core. The project also leverages any external entity, having Internet connectivity, to be part of this Core.

Realizing the importance of IPv6, Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) and the Ministry of IT and Telecom (MoITT) has emphasized on utilizing IPv6 networks in academic institutions, not only to initiate a research and development activity around the next generation IP protocol, but also to prepare human resource which is equipped with the up to date networking technology. On the initiatives of PTA, M. A. Jinnah University, Islamabad, being part of the focus group on IPv6, is submitting this project proposal. This project contains three important parts:

    1. As a foremost research and development challenge, the design and development of a multicast video streaming application, running on hybrid IPv6-IPv4 testbed network. As the initial test application, dissemination of selected lectures, seminars and research group collaboration meetings to the interested parties will be made available over the hybrid IPv6-IPv4 testbed network. The IPv6 architecture will be designed and developed to provide support of multicast, QoS (through v6 flow labels, etc.) and IPv6 to IPv4 tunneling. Hence, the key research areas of this project can be identified as the IPv6 multicast, v6 to v4 tunneling and IPv6 QoS;
    2. The pre-requisite of this research study will be the phase-wise deployment of a hybrid IPv6-IPv4 testbed connecting two remote locations, preferably in different cities, e.g. at Islamabad and Lahore;
    3. Training of telecom sector specifically, and the faculty and students in general, on the deployment of IPv6 network and the issues in the transition from IPv4 to IPv6 network.

In order to enhance the benefits of this project, the design documents related to the multicast video streaming application, source code of the application, documents describing the IPv6 testbed architecture and other information sources will be made available to public, and specially to the telecom sector and other academic institutions. The source code of the applications will be available under GNU public license.
Also plan to develop tutorial videos (such as how to configure v6 DNS, v4-to-v6 tunneling etc) that students can host on web (project web page, youtube etc). It will be good marketing tool both for the project and team members. And if you can actually have a IPv6 web page for the project (this way folks can also see IPv6 in works), that would be great (just like google v6: http://www.google.com/intl/en/ipv6/).
